History of
Anime and Manga
Manga
The modern Japanese comic (MANGA) is a fusion of two things. It is a
combo of western and eastern form of picture story telling. The Western
form is the grammar for modern comic book, which was developed in the
United States, The Eastern form is an indigenous tradition that goes back
thousands of years. Art that entertained and was mainly line art. Manga
is an out growth or, the modern expression of the same artistic vibes
that inspired the great Ikioe makers. (The Japanese wood block illustration
of the 18-19 century.) Even before the Ikioe makers, old Buddhist scroll
makers would unroll scrolls from right to left which told a story as they
were unrolled. (The animal scrolls) Later was the emergence of wood block
prints. Which was a way to mass-producing visual art. (The vertical, horizontal
face 12th century) They depicted more popular subjects often such as kabuki
actors in natural séance but they were also compiled into books
and used to tell a story in sequence so they were similar to today’s
comic system. (Art by Kunisada Utagawa 19th century)Then in the 1920’s
they discovered comics in America and started drawing in story comics
as opposed to the more traditional way. (The funnies)
All the forms of anime have this constant interest in history. Many of
the primary works are historically biased. It becomes a reflection of
history and a reflection on history. This comes out of a greater search
for identity at the heart of all the work. Anime rose directly out of
the post war situation in Japan after World War Two, specifically out
of Manga comics. (Grave of the fire flies 1988). There are a lot of reasons
why Manga culture exploded after World War Two. One was the demand for
entertainment after the suffering they went through. Most of the theaters
in Japan were gone; some artists appeared at this time. The most famous
one of all was Tezuka who was regarded as the god of Manga and anime.
Tezuka took the American comic book format an experimented with it as
he developed a much more visual oriented style. An example of Tezuka’s
style is action that just leeks into the next panel of the Manga making
your eyes travel at a fast rate across the page. Tezuka took many of the
things that he saw in Disney animations and tried to replicate them on
a physical page. As a result many of his earlier characters had a strong
resemblance to western cartoon characters. (Astro boy).
In the beginning of the 1950’s the kids were reading Manga and
kept reading them as they aged and the industry increasingly targeted
them as the market expanded. Today Manga of every genre can be found:
Hard-boiled detectives, sappy love stories, science fiction, fantasy tales,
adventure and even stories of every day life. Manga covers every subject
matter like housewife, lone sharks, people who are unemployed, office
workers, etc. Some Manga are for men, others for women and even some for
perverts. Some Manga are for kids some for adults and everyone reads them,
the Manga are a true mass media. Every one from six to sixty years old
read Manga in Japan. It is a huge industry and a huge part of Japanese
culture.
Anime
It really began with Tezuka’s Astroboy that was a Pinocchio story.
Tezuka created the first black and white TV anime in 1963 and followed
with the first full color ANIME series Cimba The Whit Lion. Early animation
in every country has to cut corners like any commercial product to reach
budget. Tezuka developed a spectrum of things, which would give an impression
of motion and action called limited animation, perfect for the Japanese
who were used to creating things with a low budget and short schedule.
In Anime it often looks like your reading Manga with the frames semi frozen
and the characters not moving as rapidly as in Disney animation. Finding
poses and angles in which the characters look good. Relying on those angles,
using dialog and cutting the settings more than in any other form of animation.
Using sliding images to create the illusion of movement, more emphasis
on close ups of faces, freezing frames and focusing on the eyes were some
of the developments of Tezuka.
As the Japanese economy continued to grow, The Anime and Manga industry
continued to expand, they moved out in all directions, into a variety
of graphic styles. Use of colors, development of fetchers, directive video
projects and also broadcast television projects.Around the 1980’s
the development of fans developed the trend of FANSUBS. Anime is post
apocalyptic due to World War II. Japanese anime is more about the feeling
the peoples, objects, the world, atmosphere and the story. Japanese anime
is neither a movie nor a comic book it is an in between.
